Everything you need to know about your CIBIL score β€” what it means, how it affects your loans, and how to improve it.

Basics

What is a CIBIL Score?

A CIBIL score (also called a credit score) is a 3-digit number between 300 and 900 that represents your creditworthiness β€” your likelihood of repaying a loan on time.

It is calculated by TransUnion CIBIL (Credit Information Bureau India Limited), one of four credit bureaus authorized by the Reserve Bank of India.

Every time you repay or default on a loan or credit card, that data is sent by your lender to CIBIL. CIBIL uses this history to calculate your score using a proprietary algorithm.

A higher score means lenders consider you a lower risk β€” and offer you better interest rates and faster approvals.

10 Proven Ways to Improve Your CIBIL Score

01

Pay EMIs on Time β€” Every Time

Set up auto-debit for all loan EMIs and credit card minimum payments. Even one missed payment can drop your score by 50–100 points.

02

Keep Credit Utilisation Below 30%

If your credit card limit is β‚Ή1 Lakh, don't spend more than β‚Ή30,000 in a billing cycle. High utilisation signals financial stress to lenders.

03

Do Not Apply for Multiple Loans at Once

Each loan application triggers a "hard inquiry" which reduces your score by 5–10 points. Space out applications by at least 6 months.

04

Maintain Old Credit Cards

Don't close old credit card accounts. The age of your oldest account contributes to your "credit age" β€” a key score factor.

05

Check Your CIBIL Report for Errors

Up to 20% of CIBIL reports contain errors. Check your report annually and raise disputes for any incorrect entries β€” errors can unfairly reduce your score.

06

Maintain a Healthy Credit Mix

Having both secured (home/car loan) and unsecured (personal loan/credit card) credit improves your score over time, compared to only one type.

07

Increase Your Credit Limit

Request a credit limit increase without spending more. This automatically reduces your utilisation ratio and improves your score.

08

Settle Overdue Accounts

Any "settled" or "written off" accounts show negatively. Try to pay them in full and get the lender to update status to "closed" β€” this helps over 12+ months.

09

Become an Add-on Card Holder

If you have no credit history, become an add-on cardholder on a family member's card with good repayment history. It helps build your score.

10

Be Patient β€” Score Recovery Takes Time

Improving a bad score takes 6–24 months of consistent positive behaviour. There are no shortcuts. Start today and track progress every quarter.

CIBIL Score Myths Busted

❌ Myth

Checking my own CIBIL score reduces it.

βœ… Fact

Self-checks are "soft inquiries" and have ZERO impact on your score. Only lender checks (hard inquiries) affect your score.

❌ Myth

I need a loan to build a credit score.

βœ… Fact

You can build credit history with a credit card too. Use it for small purchases and pay in full every month.

❌ Myth

A high income guarantees a high CIBIL score.

βœ… Fact

Income is not a factor in CIBIL score calculation. Your score is based entirely on your repayment behaviour, not earnings.

❌ Myth

Closing a loan account always improves my score.

βœ… Fact

Closing your oldest credit account can actually reduce your score by shortening your credit history. Think twice before closing old accounts.

❌ Myth

A loan rejection doesn't affect my CIBIL score.

βœ… Fact

The hard inquiry made when you applied still reduces your score, even if the loan was rejected. Apply only when you're confident of approval.
